Travelling Well in India II: What to Pack

Updated: 23 hours ago

Packing for India is a bit of a balancing act - you need to be prepared for warm weather, occasional chaos and a culture where modesty is still appreciated in many settings. The good news? With a little planning, packing for India is actually very easy.

The key is to pack light, loose and comfortable clothing that keeps you cool while still being respectful of local customs. From the dry heat of Rajasthan to the humidity of Kerala, India’s climate can vary hugely depending on where and when you travel.

For women, loose dresses, skirts, relaxed trousers and longer shorts work beautifully. It’s best to keep cleavage covered, although bare arms are absolutely fine in most situations. For men, shorts and t-shirts are perfectly acceptable, although singlets/tank tops are best avoided outside resort environments.

Comfortable footwear is essential. India can involve uneven pavements, dusty streets, cobblestones and a lot more walking than many people expect. Sturdy sandals, sneakers or supportive walking shoes are best. Jandals are generally not practical.

Weather & Seasonal Packing

Spring and autumn are generally the best times to visit India, with warm settled weather and daily temperatures often sitting in the mid to high 20s - although it can certainly creep into the 30s too.

Mornings and evenings can occasionally feel cooler, particularly in Rajasthan during spring, so it’s worth bringing:

  • one light jersey or cardigan

  • leggings or lightweight trousers

  • a light jacket or raincoat

  • a compact umbrella

Humidity varies depending on the region, but breathable fabrics are always your friend in India.

Jewellery & Accessories

Jewellery is entirely a personal choice. India is famous for gemstones and jewellery and you will undoubtedly see some extraordinary pieces while travelling. Bring what you feel comfortable wearing and always make use of your hotel room safe.

A lightweight scarf or shawl is one of the most useful things you can pack. It’s perfect for covering shoulders or knees when visiting temples, adding warmth on flights or simply dressing up an outfit for dinner. And yes…you will probably come home with at least a few beautiful pashminas.

Other useful accessories include:

  • a hat

  • sunglasses

  • a crossbody or sling bag

  • a sarong or wrap

  • insect repellent

  • comfortable day bag

Casual Clothing & Activewear

India is generally very casual during the day, so relaxed clothing is absolutely fine. Dresses, tees, loose trousers, skirts and lightweight shirts are all ideal.

If your itinerary includes:

  • swimming pools or beach stays - bring swimwear

  • gym facilities - activewear and running shoes are useful

  • walking tours or markets - comfortable sneakers are essential

And yes, if you love shopping, definitely leave room in your suitcase. India is dangerously good for textiles, jewellery, homewares and fashion.

Winter Travel

If travelling during the northern winter months (December–February), mornings and evenings in North India can become surprisingly cool, particularly in Delhi, Jaipur and Agra.

At this time of year we recommend:

  • a warmer jacket

  • sweaters or layers

  • a light scarf

  • closed shoes

You don’t need extreme winter clothing, but layering is important.

Toiletries & Personal Care

Pack all your usual toiletries and personal essentials including:

  • skincare

  • medications

  • hand sanitiser

  • sunscreen

  • insect repellent

  • sanitary products

  • dental care items

  • glasses/contact lenses if required

It’s also worth bringing electrolytes and a few comfort medications from home, just in case.

Medical Essentials

When travelling with me, I carry a very comprehensive group medical kit while travelling, however all guests should also bring their own personal medications and basic travel health items including:

  • prescription medications

  • probiotics

  • pain relief

  • antihistamines

  • diarrhoea medication

  • band aids

  • antiseptic cream

  • electrolyte sachets

  • vitamins or supplements

One thing I strongly recommend is starting a probiotic before you travel to help prepare your digestive system for the wonderful range of flavours and spices you’ll experience in India.

Final Packing Advice

The most important thing to remember is this:you really don’t need to overpack for India.

Laundry services are excellent and affordable, and you’ll almost certainly buy clothing, scarves, jewellery, homewares or gifts while you’re there.

The golden rule? Leave some room in your suitcase.

Trust me - between the bazaars of Jaipur, the textile workshops of Gujarat and the boutiques of Delhi, you’ll be very glad you did.
