DELHI
India’s capital is a sprawling amalgamation of several ‘district enclaves’ that all form what we know as Delhi. It’s a melting pot of cultures and migrants, many who arrived in relatively recent times after the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947. But it’s been an incredibly important city for centuries with many dynasties choosing its strategic location - north and central - to rule from. The remnants of its fascinating history are scattered throughout this somewhat charming city…large green parks, grand plazas and colonial-era architecture abound. Highlights include the bazaars of Old Delhi, the striking British colonial architecture of Luyten’s Delhi and the many remnants of Mughal Delhi at places like Humuyans Tomb, and Chauhan Delhi at locations such as the Qutab Minar.
MUMBAI
Mumbai is India’s largest city and commercial capital. Made famous by movies like Slumdog Millionaire, Mumbai is a living, breathing example of where India has been and where India is going. There are slums hugged by groaning multilayer freeways and skyscrapers on top of crumbling neighbourhoods. This will not be the India in your head. It’s busy, frenetic and there’s a lot of traffic. But it’s also modern and a global city on par with the energy of Hong Kong or Tokyo. The dining scene here has literally exploded in the last few years and a new restaurant opens everyday; the calibre of the experiences are world class. The city's architecture is a mix of Victorian, a remnant of the British times, Art Deco (the second largest collection after Miami), brutalism and now, modern skyscrapers. It's well worth a visit. It's also a great base to explore historical sites like Elephanta, Ajanta and Ellora Caves.
BENGALURU
India’s Silicon Valley and tech hub, Bengaluru (previously known as Bangalore), is the capital of the southern Indian state of Karnataka. It’s fast-growing, vibrant and cosmopolitan, attracting an increasing population of young professionals. Located 900 metres above sea level on the Deccan Plateau, its climate is pleasant year-round and it’s noticeably greener than the north of India. Impressive architecture abounds throughout the city that is known for great nightlife!
HYDERABAD
Ruled for centuries by the Nizams, Hyderabad is the fifth largest city in India and the capital of the state of Telangana. Its impressive palaces, bazaars and mosques make this a popular destination. Historically, Hyderabad was known as the “City of Pearls” as it was major trading centre for natural pearls as well as rare diamonds and emeralds. Some suggest that the famed Koh-i-noor (Mountain of Light) diamond was mined at the nearby Golconda mines, but this has been eternally disputed. Hyderabad was India’s biggest and richest princely state and the last ruler, Nizam Osman Ali Khan, was the world's richest man during his reign. Unsurprisingly the buildings and relics of that time are well worth a visit.
